About the course

Research and writing rarely fail because someone didn't know where to look. They fail in the places where competent work quietly goes wrong: the statute version that wasn't in force on the relevant date, the case that was never overruled but no longer means what it used to, the memo that answers a slightly different question than the one asked, the citation that doesn't survive a cite-check. This course is a refresher for legal professionals who already pull cases and draft memos. The first half covers finding and evaluating the law: framing the question, confirming that statutes, regulations and court rules are current, choosing where to start, searching, checking good law, and reading cases for what they actually decided. The second half puts that research into writing: the office memo, counteranalysis, persuasive filings, correspondence, citation and the final pass. Every module includes an interactive exercise and a short knowledge check, and nine add a quick reference or working log you can adapt for your own matters. It closes with a capstone: a full constructed file and a draft memo with planted problems to find and correct. All matters and documents in the exercises are constructed teaching material and should not be cited or used as templates for an actual legal matter.

About Samir

I'm Samir. I hold a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law and spent roughly seventeen years in immigration practice, including founding and running my own firm. This course grew out of the gap between research and writing that looks finished and work a supervising attorney can rely on without redoing it. I built it around a single test, whether the work would hold up if someone checked it, because sooner or later someone always does.
